In the heart of Imphal sits a market unlike any other in Asia: thousands of stalls, and almost every one of them run by a woman. Ima Keithel — literally "Mother's Market" — is the largest all-women market on the continent, and it has been a cornerstone of Manipuri society for centuries.
The market began as a gathering of women who traded while their husbands were away at war or on royal duty. Over time it became a powerful economic and social institution, giving generations of Manipuri women financial independence and a respected public role.
