How to reach Imphal
By air (recommended)
Bir Tikendrajit International Airport (IMF) is Imphal's gateway, about 8 km from the city centre. It has direct connections to Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati and other cities. Flights are the most reliable way in — there's no practical direct train service to Imphal.
By road
Road access exists from neighbouring states, but routes can be affected by weather and local conditions. If you drive, plan for long travel times and check the current situation before setting out. See the safety page for the latest.
By train
There is no practical direct train service into Imphal. Most visitors fly.
Best time to visit
The sweet spot is October to April, and especially November to February — cool, dry days, clear skies and the festival season. The Sangai Festival in late November is the highlight.
Avoid the monsoon (June–September) if you can: heavy rain can disrupt roads and outdoor plans. Spring (March–April) is pleasant but warmer.
Where to stay
Imphal has a growing range of hotels, from comfortable mid-range business hotels to boutique and heritage-style stays. Most are clustered in the city centre, close to Kangla Fort and Ima Keithel.
- Mid-range hotels — the most reliable choice for most travellers, with good value and central locations.
- Boutique & heritage stays — for a more atmospheric experience.
- Budget guesthouses — available, but check reviews and conditions carefully.
Book in advance during the Sangai Festival and peak season. Ask your hotel to arrange a trusted local driver — it's the safest way to get around.
Getting around
- Taxis & auto-rickshaws — the main way to move around the city. Agree on the fare before you start.
- Hired car with driver — essential for the Loktak Lake day trip. Your hotel can arrange a trusted driver.
- Walking — the city centre sights (Kangla, museum, temple, market) are walkable.
