Day Trips from Imphal

Lake basin, villages, war memorials and floating parks โ€” all within a day's drive.

Imphal is one of those rare capitals where the most extraordinary sights are within a single day's outing. The day trips below all stay inside the valley circuit — the workable, safer region — and combine well with the city itinerary. Pick one per day; don't try to fit two.

🏋 Practical wrap-around

All trips below start from Imphal after an early breakfast and return by 17:30. Hire a trusted driver (your hotel can recommend one); see transport for what to expect on rates. Always carry your permit and ID — there will be checkpoints.

Trip 1 — Loktak Lake, Sendra & Keibul Lamjao (the lake circuit)

Distance: ~45 km from Imphal · Worth: A full day · Difficulty: Easy.

06:30 · Driver and guide at the hotel. Early start to catch the morning light on the lake.
08:00 · Reach Loktak Lake. Board a small motorboat at the jetty for a quick phumdi tour: floating biomass islands, fishermen's huts, the spectacular sweep of the open water. ~1 hour on the water.
10:00 · Cross by road to Sendra Island. Climb to the Sendra viewpoint for the iconic (and now tragically rare) panoramic view of phumdis choked with introduced water hyacinth. Worth lingering.
12:30 · Lunch at a small lakeside hotel — fresh fish, Eromba, rice. Budget ∼ ₹300 per person.
14:00 · Continue to Keibul Lamjao National Park. Guide-led boat ride through the park — look for the endangered Sangai deer on the phumdi margins. ~2 hours.
16:30 · Begin return. Back in Imphal ~17:30.

Trip 2 — Moirang & the INA Memorial

Distance: ~45 km from Imphal · Worth: A half day, extendable to a full day · Difficulty: Easy.

09:00 · Driver from the hotel; cross the Loktak basin towards the south.
10:30 · Arrive in Moirang, one of the strongest war-history sites in India. Visit the INA Memorial Complex: Subhas Chandra Bose's statue, the museum of the Indian National Army, the immaculate central lawn, and the flag that was first unfurled on Indian soil by the INA.
12:30 · Lunch in town — freshwater fish, Eromba, rice.
14:00 · Option A: Continue south to the Imphal War Cemetery, beautifully kept Commonweath war graves near the airfield. Option B: return via Red Hill (Lal Pattan), the dramatic escarpment where the battle's fiercest Japanese counter-attack was stopped.
16:30 · Begin return; back in Imphal by 18:00.

Trip 3 — Thanga village on Loktak

Distance: ~32 km from Imphal · Worth: A half day · Difficulty: Easy, very leisure-paced.

For a slower experience without the full lake circuit, drive direct to Thanga village on the eastern shore of Loktak Lake. It's the official entry for boat trips into Keibul Lamjao and a working fisherfolk community. Spend the morning on the lake with a small boat, the afternoon at the village's weaving cooperative. This is the right "soft" trip if you're travelling with children or prefer fewer hours on the road.

Trip 4 — Shaheed Minar, Polo Ground & the city walking circuit

Distance: Whole trip on foot · Worth: Half a day · Difficulty: Very easy.

On one of your evenings or in cooler morning hours, walk a 4 km city circuit past the Shaheed Minar, the Polo Ground (first polo ground in modern history — birthplace of Sagol Kangjei), past the Kangla Fort walls, and end at Ima Keithel for lunch. No vehicle needed. Bring water. Best at sunrise or sunset.

Trip 5 — Sangai Festival excursion (late November)

Distance: Variable · Worth: A festival-day only trip

During the Sangai Festival, day excursions are programmed to Loktak, Sendra, Moirang and the Khongjom war memorial. Ask your hotel or the festival ground for the day's programme. We've also outlined it on our festivals page.

⚠ Plan only what fits daylight

Manipur days are short to plan around in winter (sun sets ~16:45 in November). Don't agree to be at the lake after 17:00 — and never schedule a return that relies on driving after dark on valley roads. Daytime-driving is the single most important safety rule, see the full advisory.

What to pack for any day trip

  • Permit & ID copy (you'll be asked, sometimes twice).
  • Drinking water — 1.5 L per person; keep one bottle sealed for the lake boat.
  • Snacks if the boat ride is longer than 2 hours — fresh fruit or biscuits are light to carry.
  • Hat & sunscreen for daylight hours; a light cotton layer for car AC on the return.
  • Modest change of clothes if you plan to step into a temple or village home.
  • Battery pack — don't rely on a charge between Moirang and the lake.
